More and more organizations in India are embarking on new concepts in handling information. With the changing times, information formats also have changed rapidly from print on paper to digital. There is a need for qualified and trained Library and Information Science professionals to take the lead and guide developments in helping the end users in the knowledge society. Central University of Gujarat has started the Master of Library and Information Science with a view to produce trained professionals in the areas of information science and management. Being part of an institution funded by the central government makes in its unique programme. The M.LISc. is offered as cutting edge programme that incorporates the latest developments in the field of Library and Information Science. It is envisaged that this master's programme (MLISc) will cater to the growing need for library and information professionals in India. The programme covers wide range of subjects such as concepts of Digital Library and the information management, legal framework, preservation of digital objects, information file formats, standards, protocols, inter-operability, use of Digital Library, and many other related issues. Much emphasis is given in this course on integration of research, communication and education on a digital library management platform. Students are given practical training in the actual use of Digital Library software and management of library. The Centre collaborates with INFLIBNET faculty in teaching and research programmes. Librarians and experts in Library and Information Science from many premier national institutes are invited as Visiting Faculty at the Centre.

PhD (Standalone/Direct) in Library and Information Sciences

The Doctor of Philosophy in Library and Information Science program enables students to acquire the research skills necessary for careers at Libraries of universities, teaching institutions, and Public Libraries. The Ph.D. program covers various facets of education, training, experience, and expertise that would include: Information Landscape: Changing of Information Societies, Libraries and Information Centres, Knowledge Society, Information Policy and Access, Professional Ethics, Intellectual Property Right; New Dimensions of LIS Education; Information Literacy; Information Management and Administration of Libraries; Information Organization and Access: Data science, data curation, metadata, knowledge discovery, semantic web, ontologies, information retrieval, new forms of digitally-enabled organization, e-governance, technology-driven innovation and change; Conservation and Preservation of cultural heritage and indigenous information Sources; Information and Individuals: human-computer interaction, information-seeking behaviour, medical informatics; Bibliometrics, Scientometrics, Informetrics, Webometrics, Altmetrics; Information Systems; Information and Communication Technologies; Digital Initiatives.

MASTERS OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE (M.L.I.Sc.)

This is an academic programme that will produce trained professional for multiple fields such as libraries in educational and administrative fields, information technology and any field where knowledge management has to be done scientifically. It has vast potential in our country.

The profile of education for LIS in CUG can stand on par with many nations and has assimilated all developments impacted by the Information and Communication Technologies. Library and Information Science programme in CUG is being conducted with assistance from the experts of INFLIBNET which is the apex body providing infrastructural support to Universities in the context of digital resources.

The Master of Library and Information Science course also has the objective of democratizing access to information by training graduates from different backgrounds to become proactive knowledge workers in the process of collecting, organizing, consolidating and disseminating the knowledge for social transformation, scientific and technological growth and economic prosperity. The admission is done through an all India test and the intake of 25 students. Students are trained in all aspects of library and information science through the best professionals in the field.

Post Graduate Diploma in Digital Library and Information Management(PGDLIM)

The PGDLIM course caters to the technological needs of the aspiring library professionals and other technical professionals interested in Digital Library Management. The PGDLIM course will enable the students to understand key elements in digital library and information management. The course has a blend of online content and contact classes.

The intention of the course is to acquaint the students in digitization activities in libraries of all levels i.e. schools, colleges, universities, public libraries, and research organizations.

Duration:

One Year (Online classes with contact classes of 25 working days) Online classes are conducted as MOOC and through a MOODLE based system with online submission of assignments and field work reports.
